Several years of heavy layoff's and executive management improprieties have taken it's toll. Many of the best sales people were fired in the years ofter 9/11 because they came short of quota. Management does not understand how to sell so good people were lost in a time when the entire high tech but especially Telecom industries were struggling to get by. The same old management is still there and maintaining the status quo. Nortel has many good voice and data products but they keep trying to offload the sales effort on the channel partners who are satisfied with, and vested, in selling Cisco.

Advice for prospective applicants:

Nortel has some advantages. If you like to work from home it is easy to do with Nortel. Nortel is one of the few companies that will give you a company car with gas and all maint paid. With the price of gas this is a nice benefit. If you are an engineer at Nortel you should pursue Cisco certifications because Nortel experience is worth nothing on the job market.

Although they're obviously a huge company, they did a pretty good job of making it feel like something much smaller. They kept you in touch with the larger organization, but also made each local lab feel more like a small company of its own.
