I'm in sales (auto insurance) but have always been intrigued by Pharma since you guys seem to have the most fun and get to meet hot doctors. How competitive is it these days?

It is competitive because it is lucrative. But The pharmaceutical industry is just expected to grow so the number of opportunities is only going to increase.

A pharmaceutical sales job is one of the most popular sales jobs today. A great number of individuals want to enter this industry. The pharmaceutical sales field is commonly referred to as “recession proof” work since the pharmaceutical sector is among the ever evolving, largest and most stable business in the world.

Sellerina,

I see you work for McKesson.  I currently consult for your company on the RFID technology side.  I used to work for Merck, AstraZeneca and Elan as a sales representative, trainer, scientist and eventually District and Regional Manager for the West Coast.  Still keep in contact with many of my former colleagues and they still tell me that the pharmaceutical sales positions that open are highly sought after.  As a former hiring manager, I can tell you when I had even just one opening, I would have over 2000 resumes to go through.  So there is competition for these positions.

I've recently considered pharma as I feel that is where my heart is. I am currently is a sales position and I love my job and the company that I work for but feel that I could put my experience to better use in a field that utilizes what I practiced for 12 years prior to taking this position.

I am confused a little about the best course to take as I try to get my foot in the door. I have several friends in pharma, they like it and see a great future there but are very vague when it comes to the ability to direct me, per se.

Any assistance in this area would be appreciated.
