What do you think about utilizing social media/networks to market and/or sell?

Do you think they are helping or hurting business?  Why?

It depends on what you're objectives are.  If you're a real estate agent with a myspace profile, don't expect results.  I think if you're a consultant with industry expertise and want to grow a following, start a blog or interact where your prospects do, and it will indirectly benefit sales.

I think it completely depends on the product or service you are promoting.  With Digg, Stumbleupon, etc., readers really only connect with relevant or interesting content, so most submissions by marketers wont do much.  On SalesHQ we have some success with social media, but even when things go viral traffic spikes but most of the new visitors don't convert to users (because they are not sales people or interested in a sales community - they just came to read the headline).  Its all depends :)

Never the less, regarding the topic, I cant think of how social media would be "hurtful".  Can anyone help me?
