Why Prepare

Before you take a vacation plans have to be made. One of the steps in planning is that you prepare for the trip. The first of the plans will be deciding where to go. Then you choose where to stay, how much to spend, how you are going to get to the location and finally what to pack. . Within your itinerary you have a contingency plan just in case the original plan has been changed due to circumstances beyond your control.

Another situation that requires prior planning is going out for the evening, You make dinner reservations at a certain restaurant , You know the movie you wish to view, or the dance hall where you want to dance .

You may even have your days off planned. Whether it be the responsibility of completing your honey do list, or a day sitting poolside to catch your breath. Enjoying the beautiful day ahead of you.

Often you do not apply the same type of planning or preparation for your work day. You arrive on time, never absent, ready to take on the responsibilities of the day. You work relentless until the end of the day. You go home, never giving your day a second thought ,geared up to institute the same behavior tomorrow.

Consider that we spend more time in the workplace then any other place . Rarely a thought of techniques to develop a superior work situation or advanced standing in the company. You do as you are told ,completing the tasks given to you. If the workplace does not give you the time to improve, during the work hours, it does not get done. Why is it the responsibility of the employer to always bestow resources for you to become a better employee? This responsibility is yours to embark upon. It is your accountability which becomes enriched and it is your sole commitment to self improvement that will allow this journey to begin.

Take the time to read as much as you can concerning what you can do for the company. Become skilled about as much as you can on product knowledge. If your profession deals with sales, examine and gain knowledge of as much as you can on attitude, sales objections and closings. This in turn will be repaid to you with knowledge which can never be taken from you. The more education you can gain from being self taught has so much more worth both professionally and personally. There is no dollar amount which can be placed on knowledge. Long term, the money that can be earned is limitless when you are able to apply this knowledge.

The more you learn the better prepared you will be. Your preparation will stand out ; your clients will be able to interpret you as being intelligent, honest ,trusting while helping them make their decision. Your answers to the concerns of the client will be more open ,honest and trustworthy. You will answer their concerns more swiftly which builds confidence that you understand the basic problem and your solution is the correct solution to their problem

Rich,

I couldn't agree with you more!  Knowledge is the best long-term investment period. I also agree that knowledge leads to preparation, and being prepared translates to respect from fellow colleagues, clients, adn superiors.  The real question here is how do I educate myself, where do i spend my time and resources learning?  What do I need to know to take me to the next level??

Ethan. A quick question. Are you asking the questions you have, need to be in the article? or are they questions asking where do you find them yourself.

If your asking  for yourself. The library. I prefer to pruchase them myself so I do not have to return them. ( Bookstores). That way I am able to read  anytime something I have already read to refresh myself.  The answer to the second question is a question right back.  What don't you need to know to reach any level. You need to know everything you can in order to  enter the next level. It is a never ending saga of gaining information.

When you purchase a book.,go to the authors website in order to  buy  what you wish t oown.

Rich,

We live in an age where information is so freely distributed.  Many times I have considered buying books on certain subjects but ended up refraining as I found the information I was looking for on the web.  Nothing prevents a person from saving a website page, or copying and pasting text into a word document to read again at a later time.

That being said, there exists premium information that is only avalible in books, detailed analysis from a respected expert...One of the main purposes of this site is to bridge the gap between buying books and finding free information.  If you look under the "ADVICE" channel, there is plenty of resources written by experts to help sales professionals be better at their jobs.

I agree that one should never stop learning and there is always a next level to climb towards...

Rich,

I've found especially lately that I would much rather purchase a book, sit in B&N and actually absorb it. Now, do I actually do this? hardly ever but when I do I find that I'm refreshed and have actually absorbed what I've just read, whether it be for work, continuing education or pleasure.

I feel that preparing for the day ahead is imperative. As most people know Glenn Beck has a miriad of guests on his radio and CNN show and he's always talking about the books etc that this or that guest has put out etc. He commented lateley that he had a guest on the show and was unable to read their publication prior or had a hard time finding the book due to release date issues. It just goes to show that it's important to be prepared and a CV or resume is often the best to to do so.

The learning process is continual. I feel that the desire to continue in that vein is what helps those who desire to be at the top to get there and those who already reside there to keep their edge.
