I am very intersted in interning for an up and coming business in Philadelphia, PA. I hope to eventually own my own business one day, and working under professionals who are in the process of creating their own success stories would be invaluable. I am a marketing major at St. Joseph's University with a resume ready upon reply. Message me! Thanks!!

Hi Knihill. Internships are the best best things you can do during college. An unpaid internship at a hot company is worth way way more than a $15/hr cafe job to make an extra buck. Heres my advice.

1. Go to St Josephs Career Center and see if companies are recruiting interns on your campus. I just graduated from UC Berkeley, and our career center was full of internship opportunities, some paid, some unpaid.

2. Decide for yourself what skills you want to build. Try to find something that will allow you to build do skills.

3. Research companies on your own...if you find one you want to work for, cold call them and find out if they have any internship opportunities. If they have never had an intern, suggest what you could offer as as intern. If you do that, be clear about the kind of position you'd be interested in, you are essentially creating your own job :). A lot of start-ups would LOVE to have free help. You will definitely learn a lot too in a small company.

4. Use you schools alumni network. At my school, there is an online network of UC Berkeley Grads that have opened themselves up as neworking resources. If one of them works at a company you like, contact them and ask them if they know about any opportunities for interns. You never know what the power of connections can bring.

5. Examine your personal network. Get in touch with friends or friends of friends that may have connections. Go to them to ask advice and they will usually offer help to you.

Good luck!!!

Experience does hold fantastic value. for what you want to gain from the experience. College internships are a great way to be introduced and make contacts. One major factor to leave out of all conversations will be the want you have in starting up your own business. I find it amazing that owners of companies are insecure and will always think you will want to steal away their clients. My thought on this,if you can steal the clients they have not built the trust and long term relationship they think they have.

      good luck
